Om Aretha Franklin’s 50 jaar in Pop muziek te vieren brengt Music On Vinyl een dubbelalbum plus een
bonus 10” uit met daarop het beste uit de opnames die ze voor Columbia Records heeft gemaakt. De
opmerkelijke opnames op deze luxe release overtuigen ons van het feit dat Aretha Franklin al Soul
Royalty was toen ze als 18-jarige gospelzangeres vol met hoop, potentie en zicht op succes haar eerste
album opnam voor Columbia Records. De albums The Electrifying Aretha Franklin en A Bit Of Soul
zijn – samen met een bonus 10” EP – nu opnieuw gemastered van de originele analoge opnames en
vormen een mijlpaal in Aretha’s noemenswaardige carrière bij Columbia.
Met The Electrifying… wist Aretha Franklin het publiek direct te betoveren toen het in 1962 uitkwam, en
ze won dat jaar dan ook de listener’s poll van Downbeat Magazine. De paar releases die bij Columbia zijn
uitgekomen hebben de weg geëffend voor haar latere troonbestijging als de Queen Of Soul bij Atlantic.
Het nooit eerder uitgebrachte A Bit Of Soul laat zien hoe ze haar stem vond bij Columbia. Deze opnames
